Dance: A Department Again!

The Fall of 2007 marks the dance programs move from being part of the Performing Arts department to being a stand-alone department. The department was originally founded by Ruth St. Denis in 1938 as one of the first academic dance programs in the country. It was brought under the umbrella of the Performing Arts department and survived programmatic scalebacks in the 1990s thanks in large part to the protective leadership of Nick Petron.

The chair of the once-again department is ballet master Professor Frank Augustyn.
Express your unique skills in dance movements that capture your creativity and talent. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) with a specialization in dance is a performance-based program with equal time given to the study of classical and modern dance techniques.

You will perfect your skills in small classes taught by a dedicated faculty with extensive experience as dance professionals and academicians. Workshops, senior projects, and Dance Adelphi offer many performance opportunities.

Given the dance program's excellent reputation and Adelphi's proximity to New York City, you will have numerous opportunities to pursue a career in dance. Adelphi graduates have succeeded in many areas of dance, as outstanding performers in ballet and modern dance companies, but also in other disciplines including dance journalism, dance therapy, dance lighting and design, dance on television, and commercial theatre. Other graduates have entered the teaching profession and hold positions in both academic and professional areas.
