Theatre: Acting FAQs

What is your guarantee of performing?
We're one of the few schools guaranteeing that every major will perform on stage in one of our productions during the year, and all have the right to earn other opportunities through competitive auditioning.

Can I transfer in?
Yes! You must audition, and you must have had classes that we consider equivalent to some of ours. In order to determine which courses are equivalent, you must meet with the chair of the department.

Can I major in Acting and something else?
No. Our department does not allow a double major. We have a professionally oriented degree, and much time spent learning on stage and backstage. We encourage all of our students to minor in other fields.

Can I minor in Acting?
Yes. Go to minor in acting. For more information, contact our office at 516.877.4930.

Can I audition on videotape?
Yes, if you are unable to make a personal appointment or are located too far from campus you may send a videotape.

Why can't I audition to perform in departmental productions as a first-year acting student?
The possible stresses of college, our program, of being away from home, and the need for young talent to take root and develop are among the reasons why first-year students perform in their own workshops (within their acting classes) and for directors-in-training but not in departmental productions. First-year students can however help build, paint, crew and run them. In the second year, all acting students join in the competitive audition process.

Can I get scholarship money for more than one discipline?
Few schools offer what we do: money for talent, for scholarship, and for need, with all available at the same time. Talent scholarships are based on the student's audition. Most accepted students receive some financial assistance.

Do you set up professional internships for students?
No, only companies or off-campus organizations can do that. However we encourage our students to explore them, offer credit for them, supervise them and make information about getting them available to third and fourth-year students.

What special subjects can I study at Adelphi's Acting Program?
We encourage all of our students to explore their skills and special talents. We have specialized classes in different levels in subjects like Theatre Make-Up, Stand-Up Comedy, Stage Combat, Creating the One-Person Show, Stage Management, Auditioning In New York City...the possibilities are unlimited.
