The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) with a specialization in acting prepares you for a leading role and provides a firm foundation in the traditions and literature of the theatre. Professionally and practically oriented, students study acting, theatre, voice, and theatre movement in a conservatory-style program under the direction of
faculty of accomplished theatre and academic professionals. Unlike many other programs, the department guarantees public performances for its students.
The program takes advantage of the University's location just outside New York City, the world center of theatre, by encouraging and arranging field trips to studios, theatres, and production centers, and by inviting well-known working professionals to campus to conduct master classes.
The
plan of study includes acquiring the basic vocal and physical skills required by an actor and then refining and honing those skills. Throughout the entire four years, students participate in a wide array of performance activities, including technique and class scene study, solo and ensemble work in chamber theatre, cabaret, and community performances.
Students may participate in independent study or earn credit through professional internships.
Only acting majors and
minors are allowed to audition for departmental productions; every student is guaranteed of performance opportunities and may earn many more through auditioning.
Admission requirements include a mandatory audition that is scheduled by appointment. Scholarships are available on a limited basis.
