College of Arts and Sciences

The Department of Communications prepares students for a wide range of careers — from the creation of media for artistic and commercial purposes to public relations, media analysis and journalism. Students pursuing a major in communications must select a concentration in one of these three disciplines:

Students may also minor in communications.

The department prides itself on the creation of a learning community that challenges, supports and encourages all students at every level to reach their potential. In rigorous classes, students gain the essential skills to enable them to access, analyze and use information and to learn how to communicate in both traditional and digital contexts. The course of study culminates in a senior thesis which represents a major research project in the student’s prime area of interest.

Students are mentored by a faculty with academic and professional experience in the three disciplines. Professional internships provide first-hand experience which may lead to future employment.

The department offers many opportunities for students to hone their skills and present their work. At the end of each semester, students participate in a major on-campus festival of student films and videos. Students are encouraged to join Works in Progress, a department club that maintains a public access television station that screens student work. SAY IT! is a media literacy program in which Adelphi students help children in the New York City school system to create different forms of media. Students can contribute to the award-winning Delphian, the student newspaper or P.A.W.S., the Adelphi radio station.

Students interested in a broader and more intense curricular and extracurricular program can apply for dual entry to the Communications Department and the Honors College. Still another option is to apply for entry to the Department of Communications and to the Levermore Global Scholars Program which offers community involvement, interdisciplinary study, and global learning. In both the Honors College and the Levermore Global Studies Program, students are immersed in the rich cultural and artistic life of New York City.
