The minor in Asian Studies offers a multidisciplinary approach to understanding a region that has played an important role throughout history and has emerged as one of the most economically dynamic and politically influential areas in the world. This comprehensive approach gives students a broad-based knowledge that integrates history, politics, economics, geography, anthropology, natural sciences, and culture, including film, art, and music.

Asian Studies at Adelphi goes beyond the conventional study of humanities and natural sciences. Our science professors take a more expansive approach to the region. The region's impact on early civilizations is demonstrated in the archeological research of Anagnostis Agelarakis, professor of anthropology, that shows the early development of urbanization in Southwest Asia.

Students will have the opportunity to study some of the following countries:
  • East Asia—China, Japan, and Korea

  • Southeast Asia—Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, and Cambodia

  • South Asia—India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka

  • Southwest Asia—Iran and Iraq

  • Central Asia—Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan
Adelphi students have the opportunity to study Chinese language and culture through accredited study abroad programs in China sponsored by Brethren Colleges Abroad and the Council on International Educational Exchange.
