Introduction |
Adelphi University has a longstanding commitment to the visual and performing arts, and the department of art and art history has a well-deserved reputation for the excellence of both its undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Now, in addition to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), we are proud to offer you a fully accredited Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art; a professionally-oriented degree program for students with career ambitions in the visual arts.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) program begins with a rigorous studio foundation in drawing and design and culminates in concentrated study in either painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, or graphic design. You will graduate with the confidence and the portfolio necessary for art-related employment or advanced study at the graduate level.

The Curriculum
Students embark on a four-year journey toward visual sophistication and accomplishment beginning with studio foundation classes in drawing, color, and design that explore a "grammar of form"—organizational and procedural principles similar to the role of grammar in language. Drawing and design become useful tools in addressing the structure of form, instilling professional work habits, and revealing and clarifying a student's personal artistic vision.
Introductory courses give students a broad exposure to many disciplines including printmaking, painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, calligraphy, ceramics, illustration, and digital art. In the senior year, students concentrate in one area and work with mentors to solidify their personal direction.
Our Faculty
We have assembled a team of experienced art professionals to nurture your intellectual and creative development and help you make the transition from raw talent to accomplished artist by first recognizing your natural ability and then fostering your skill, understanding, and confidence.
Our extensive faculty of artists and art historians is dedicated to teaching and active in their own work, exhibiting and publishing regularly. We make a point of hiring artists and scholars who go far beyond merely supporting their studio work and research with teaching jobs. Our professors and instructors regard teaching as an art form and relish the challenges and rewards of working with younger artists. They are readily accessible and supportive both as teachers and advisers.
Our Classes
Our class sizes are unusually small. You will be seen and heard, and stand out as an individual. Compared to classes of 20-25 students at many other schools, our typical introductory studio art class seldom exceeds 14 students. At Adelphi, dialogue between students and faculty flows freely in a relaxed atmosphere.
Honors in Art
Students who earn a minimum GPA of 3.75 in art and art history courses, based on seven semesters of work, will be awarded Honors in Art.
Advisement
Entering students are assigned an art professor who will guide them through registration and be available for consultation as the need arises. Students will have the same adviser throughout their four-year course
The Artist in Residence Program
In spring 2006 we initiated an Artist in Residence program. Each year, an artist will be invited to our campus for a period of three weeks to work among our students on an original piece of art. While in residence, the visiting artist will also deliver at least one public lecture and be available to students for informal consultations.
Interacting with the Art World
Input from guest artists and professionals in the art world is an important part of our studio art program. We currently schedule eight lectures and discussions per year with outside artists and designers who are also invited into the classroom for group critiques. We also extend invitations to art historians and other art world professionals.
